When you install SAP Gateway in your system, you won’t find a bank of perfectly crafted OData services. Rather than delivering a large number of services, SAP Gateway is more of an infrastructure that allows you to easily develop or generate your own OData services.

 

We deliver OData services together with consumer-grade applications through SAP Fiori instead. By developing SAP Gateway, our goal was to create the best development environment possible for the SAP Business Suite so that you can create services that are optimized and specialized for exactly the intended use.

 

SAP Gateway Architecture

There are add-ons that provide the SAP Gateway Server functionality (GW_CORE and IW_FND) and there is an add-on (IW_BEP) that provides the SAP Gateway back-end functionality. The add-on IW_BEP is deployed on the SAP Business Suite back end because that is where the service development takes place.

 

With SAP NetWeaver 7.40, the software components of these add-ons are delivered as part of the SAP Basis in a single software component, SAP_GWFND. This means that the software components for the back-end functionality, as well as the software components for the SAP Gateway server functionality, are available on every system running on top of SAP NetWeaver 7.40.

It allows utility companies to interact with their customers through different communication channels, for example, the Web (online self-services), mobile, and social networks. SAP Multichannel Foundation for Utilities and Public Sector provides a set of standardized and reusable OData services that are used by end-user applications to access data and processes from SAP Business Suite for Utilities, all on an attractive and adjustable HTML5 user interface and OData services layer.
